VAN NUYS AIRPORT ASSOCIATION ANNOUNCES NEW BOARD OF DIRECTORS OFFICERS (Van Nuys, Calif. – July 13, 2010) Four new officers have been elected to the Van Nuys Airport Association (VNAA) board of directors to oversee strategic efforts to promote aviation, foster economic development and build community partnerships, the organization announced today. The appointments come in the midst of unprecedented job losses and budget cuts at Van Nuys Airport (VNY), which this year lost its rank as the nation’s busiest general aviation airport to Deer Valley Airport in Phoenix, Ariz., due to a steep decline in aircraft operations.
Founded in June 1982, the VNAA is a collaboration of airport tenant representatives committed to helping businesses run successfully, creating and retaining jobs, and mentoring and supporting the next generation of aviation professionals. The newly elected officers will lead VNAA’s current efforts at VNY to suspend rental rate increases, save jobs and businesses, re-establish U.S. Customs service and build new partnerships with community and business organizations to achieve economic growth. Board members include:
President – Curt Castagna, CEO and president, Aerolease Group
1st Vice President – Elliot Sanders, owner, Planned Approach Benefits and former president of the VNY Propeller Aircraft Association
2nd Vice President – Tim Wray, chief operating officer, Maguire Aviation
Treasurer and Secretary – Jeanne Fenimore, owner, Aircraft Sparkplug Service
“Each of our new officers brings a diversity of experience, deep passion for aviation and
commitment to the community to VNAA,” Castagna said. “Van Nuys Airport is on the verge of an economic state of emergency. Now, more than ever, we need the best leadership to help dramatically improve conditions for the more than 100 businesses and 5,800 employees who call Van Nuys Airport home. We are committed to partnering with Los Angeles World Airports to develop fair and reasonable solutions that will save jobs, retain businesses and preserve the economic vitality of the San Fernando Valley.”
Released by VNAA in December 2009, an independent survey of 15 major aviation companies at VNY indicated a net loss of 383 jobs since December 2007, a 41.21 percent decrease among the airport’s largest employers, and a 30 percent decrease in fuel sales. Other factors contributing to harsh economic conditions at VNY include aviation leaseholds that have remained vacant for the past decade; the planned early phase-out of Stage II aircraft; an increase in the airport’s fuel flowage fee; and the loss of U.S. Customs service.
Other members of the VNAA board of directors include: Jim Davis, FBO manager, Pentastar Aviation; Clay Lacy, chief executive officer, Clay Lacy Aviation; Pierre-Louis Moroni, president, Syncro Aviation; Harold Lee, president, Air Sources, Inc.; and Audrey Snider, general aviation representative. Directors are elected to serve a two-year term and officers are elected to serve a one-year term. For more information about VNAA, visit www. fly2vny.org or call Curt Castagna at (562) 981-2659.
